oboken, was the first engineer tobuild a Watt condensing engine on theAmerican continent. The engine wasbuilt at Belleville, N. J., a small village onthe Passaic River. It was put into aboat, to which a stern wheel was applied, and the boat was run from Bellevilledown the Passaic by Newark, out intoNewark Bay, and thence to New York. This was several years before Fulton be-gan his experiments in applying steam tothe propulsion of vessels. It is not generally known that this sameJohn Stevens patented the multitubularboiler in 1803. That form of boiler waswhat was wanting in the earliest form ofBritish locomotives, and its introductionby the Stephensons was the most im-portant means of making the Rocketbeat its competitors. In Europe the in-vention of the tubular boiler is generallycredited to a French engineer and some-times to an official of the Liverpool &Manchester Railroad, named Booth, whosuggested to George Stephenson that heuse that form of boiler.
