Yet my feet wereswollen and very painful; so I was gladto meet a traveling Indian, who good-naturedly lent me his mule and joined uson our trip. I crossed a stream on mymule, and nobody can describe the sensa-tion of this experiment unless he has triedit himself. The mule almost disappearedin the water under my weight, and onlythe long ears appeared above the sur-face. At last we reached Gualan, a town ofsome 5,000 inhabitants (not counting thefleas), and I was heartily glad once moreto strike a place that looked like civiliza-tion. My first visit was to Hackmeyer &Co., where I related the treatment we ex-perienced under Roberts and demandedimmediate payment of our salaries, whichby this time amounted to about $5,000 alto-gether.
