Summary edit

Description

English: Wall of the upper loggia of the Capuchins' enclosure, at the Certosa di Bologna. The monumental cemetery is part of the 'Portici di Bologna' World Heritage Site recognised by Unesco. Funerary monuments painted in tempera and those made of stucco and scagliola present special challenges for their preservation: restorers assess maintenance, restoration and conservation work on a case-by-case basis, also considering the preservation of artistic legibility. One of the typical problems is 'rising damp', which causes the plaster to swell and detach, in particular relation with the issues of the microclimate of the Certosa di Bologna and hygroscopic materials. The most famous and ancient tombs have been restored several times and with different techniques over time.
