Summary edit

Description
English: Rectangular, elaborately decorated belt mount of a spatha.
  • Szentendre, Pest County, Hungary

The belt mount was found in Grave 34 of the Lombard grave field at Szentendre. This was a disturbed grave, presumably of a man.

At Szentendre, a grave field with 91 burials was excavated. This site provides the name for a type of Lombard grave field typical of the north Danubian region which - in contrast to the markedly smaller necropolises in the southern Pannonian region - between 90 and 100 burials took place. Wooden coffins and in some instances mortuary chambers were placed in the graves.

The grave field of Szentendre is counted among the classic Lombard grave fields in Pannonia.

  • Photographed while on display from 22 August 2008 to 11 January 2009 in the exhibition "Die Langobarden. Das Ende der Völkerwanderung" at the Rheinisches LandesMuseum Bonn. On loan from the Hungarian National Museum, Budapest.
Deutsch: Rechteckiger, aufwändig verzierter Gürtelbeschlag einer Spatha.
  • Szentendre, Komitat Pest, Ungarn
