Description
English: Grave goods of a Lombard warrior from Harsefeld
  • Harsefeld, District of Stade, Lower Saxony, Germany

About 250 undisturbed burials of cremation remains have been recovered at the grave field of Harsefeld. Yet this is only a fraction of the interments formerly here, whose total number is estimated at several thousand. According to physical anthropological findings, this was a cemetery for men. This is confirmed by the grave goods, such as weapons and tools. Segregating graveyards by sex is regarded as typical of the Lombards.

Grave 26
Burial of a warrior. An iron Roman cauldron that served as an urn contained cremated remains as well as rich grave goods.
1. A bent double-edged sword of iron with silver fittings. The point of the sword is a hollow silver knob.
2. Two bronze silver-inlaid spurs.
3. Bronze components of a drinking horn approximately 40-42 cm long. It had a liquid capacity of ca. half a liter. Belonging to it are mouthpiece fittings decorated with round eyes, chain links of the hanging strap, and the metal fitting of the tip.

  • Photographed while on display from 22 August 2008 to 11 January 2009 in the exhibition "Die Langobarden. Das Ende der Völkerwanderung" at the Rheinisches LandesMuseum Bonn. On loan from the Schwedenspeicher Museum, Stade.
Deutsch: Grab eines langobardischen Kriegers von Harsefeld
  • Harsefeld, Landkreis Stade, Niedersachsen, Deutschland

Leihgaben vom Schwedenspeicher Museum, Stade.
