Description
English: This is Sloane Street, Knightsbridge[1], looking at the Holy Trinity Church[2], and then down to Sloane Square.

A 137 bus, a Routemaster, can be seen bound for Crystal Palace (several other Routemasters are in the background, together with classic London cabs and other street furniture of the era), the people in the bus queue are dressed for a winter's morning. Some of the street furniture bears black and white stripes, presumably a left over from the war-time blackout. The Londoners wear typical, but mostly high status clothes of he time including furs, hats for all, and skirts or dresses for the ladies and girls. The boy in the queue is wearing shorts, again as was normal all year round. The gentleman at the front of the queue has removed one glove and is sheltering a lit cigarette behind his back. Four wheels are visible just in front of the bus on the far side, this may be the same bicycle stands there today. The London Electricity Board shop (now Cassandra Goad) has a distinctive sign, after the notable Holy Trinity, which still has a bus stop outside where the 22 can be caught as in the photo, then the current HSBC. Across Sloane Square is the large white building Hugo Boss took over from newsagents W.H.Smith & Son c. 2007, and a view down Lower Sloane Street (possibly as far as the Rose and Crown?) Also on the south side of Sloane square is the now Gieves and Hawkes building (then Gieves and co?) The pavement closest to us shows the cast iron circular covers for delivering coal directly to the houses on the right side of the picture (now Savills and Zadig & Voltaire), with the signs for the tobacconists (now Pringle) "Cigars", "Gold Flake" and others.
