Summary edit

Description
English: Charles Babbage case at the Science Museum, London.
Charles Babbage (1791-1871) was one of Victorian England's most creative thinkers. He is most famous for inventing the powerful mechanical calculators on display here and in the Making the Modern World gallery on the ground floor.

Less well known is his pioneering work on lighthouse signaling, or the shoes he invented for walking on water. Babbage also proposed a decimal currency system and predicted the use of tidal power. His ideas and doodles fill over 6000 pages in his scribbling books, some of wich are shown in this case.

Babbage's life was a social whirl. He held popular Saturday-night soirees at wich he demonstrated his latest inventions. His diary for 1844 shows appointments with the Duke of Somerset, portrait painter Samuel Laurence and admirer Ada Lovelace.
