DescriptionLongham, postbox No. BH22 63 and old post office - geograph.org.uk - 1142703.jpg |
English: Longham: postbox № BH22 63 and old post office Under the Post Office Ltd. closure programme of 2008 in which 2,500 branches would be axed, 954072 was due to close on 3 February but evidently it has done so before that date. A notice in the window states that the (ex-)postmaster very much regrets the closure and will continue to campaign, along with villagers and the Town Council, for its reinstatement. Meanwhile it appears he is going to try to keep the shop running without the post office.
We are looking at the building from across the main road, unlike in the image linked above, and we can see the left-hand of two 'Lady Wimborne' semi-detached cottages which were built in 1856, to which the shop is attached. There are many cottages of this character dotted around this area, being part of the estate of Canford, owned by Lady Wimborne at the time they were built. The postbox is a George VI-reign one and is emptied finally at 5:30pm on weekdays and at noon on Saturdays. |
