English: Looking towards the North Sea. Hexagonal pillbox (Type FW3/24) of reinforced concrete with brick shuttering, fitted with Turnbull mounts. The structure was erected in 1940/41 as part of the coastal crust defences. Defence of Britain database ID: S0001053.
By looking towards the coast in a straight line from the left-hand corner of this pillbox, the remains of an anti-tank ditch can be seen. See also > 749785 and 749793. The ditch was erected as part of the coastal crust defences in 1940/41 at the edge of this cliff in order to block entrance from the beach. Defence of Britain database site reference: S0001011 In an effort to prevent an anticipated German invasion, a network of defences, the most common being so-called pillboxes, was constructed in 1940 at strategic points, along rivers and canals, as well as along the coast and on airfields.
