Their fingers actually touched for a brief second,and the dusky youth ran the risk of precipitatinghimself headforemost into the canyon in his des-perate effort to help, but he failed. Arlos, with hisscared face turned upward, sped down the face ofthe rock like a cannon ball into the swirling water,passing deep below the surface, but quickly appear- ing again. He was an excellent swimmer and did not losehis presence of mind. His Winchester was clutchedin his left hand, but he was able to swim with hisright and his feet, and he made good use of them.
