Summary edit

Description Lot-11573-1: North African Campaign, November 1942 to May 1943. The Tricolor flies again over the Kasbah Mehdia, ancient Portuguese fortress near Fort Lyautey, French Morocco, although the fortress capitulated after three days’ fighting with American landing forces in November. The portion of the fortress shown above bears the marks of American bombardment. Near this spot, visited by President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s part in North Africa is an American cemetery where white crosses mark the graves of American soldiers who died. The Stars and Stripes hang from the flagpole there, and against the pole the American party laid a large wreath. The photograph, showing a French sentry and American soldiers at ease. Photographed probably late January 1943. Office of War Information Photograph. Courtesy of the Library of Congress. (2016/06/17).
