Summary edit

Description Lot-803-34: Aleutian Islands Campaign, June 1942 - August 1943. Allied Landing on Attu Island, May 11 1943. Tenseness of Battle Grips These Men on Attu Ridge. High upon Chicagof Ridge overlooking Chicagof Harbor, American soldiers were so intent on their job that the Navy Combat Photograph Unit cameraman didn’t have to worry about “camera muggers.” The men in the foreground load a shell into a small mortar. Note the fur jacket worn by the man in the prone position. It was taken from a dead Japanese. Chicagof Harbor was the last Japanese stronghold to fall in the fighting on Attu Island in the Aleutians. U.S. Navy photograph, released July 20, 1943. Photographed through Mylar sleeve. (2015/11/06).
