| Description | Lot 4102-15: Operation Torch, 1942. America at War: The Voyage on the Contessa. Shown is the merchant vessel, Contessa, drafted from a peacetime fruit route for Allied convoy work and finally assigned because of its size and shallow draft to one of the most dangerous and unique missions of the United Nation’s landings in North Africa. The Contessa carried a cargo of high octane gasoline and ammunition across the Atlantic and up an uncharted African river to supply Allied fighters and bombers. Collection of the Office of War Information, 1946. (7/24/2015). |
