Summary edit
DescriptionLough Boora, Broughal, Co. Offaly - geograph.org.uk - 1094987.jpg |
English: Lough Boora, Broughal, Co. Offaly This view, from the top of a large mound of material excavated from a silt pond, shows in foreground the huts of the National Museum's excavation of the mesolithic encampment at Louth Boora which at 6800-6500 BC is one of the earliest dated sites in Ireland. In middle distance, a Bord na Móna train carries milled peat. On the horizon is Ferbane power station, the first ESB peat-burning station, in operation from 1957 until 2001. Some efforts were made to preserve one of the cooling towers, e.g. as an observation platform, but it was demolished on 24th February 2002. |
