On rapprochera ce beau portrait de celui magistralement gravé par Robert Nanteuil et qui est absolument sa réplique. Le portrait de la gravure est inversé ce qui pourrait indiquer que cette peinture a servi de modèle au graveur.

Seule la décoration de l'Ordre du Saint-Esprit ne figure pas sur l'estampe. Il est évident au vu de la qualité picturale de l'oeuvre que l'on doit en chercher l'auteur parmi les maîtres du genre de la fin du dix-septième siècle. Boucherat était un homme de goût et sans doute un bibliophile et un collectionneur. (On a récemment vendu une reliure à ses armes sur une édition des Caractères au prix de 101500 euros.)
