||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Description |
English: Tried for treason by the Duke of Alva's "Council of Blood" for their defense of traditional liberties and opposition to the establishment of the Inquisition in the low lands, Egmont and Horne were beheaded on June 5, 1568. Their executions sparked the rebellion which resulted in the independence of Holland. With the rise of nationalism in the 19th century, they were glorified as martyrs of Flemish freedom. |
