Summary edit

Description
English: Lumsdale Valley Industrial Archaeological Site 582873 : Previous -- (12 of 26) -- Next : 582882

The steep hillside has been formed into a series of levels, with each level housing industrial machinery that made use of the waters power. This photograph, taken about halfway up from Lumsdale at the bottom to the reservoir at the top, shows a track leading out toward Lumsdale Road.

The path though the site continues up the stone steps on the left.

'The Lumsdale Valley is one of the best examples of a water-powered industrial archaeological site in Great Britain. It is unusual to see such extensive use of water power in such a relatively small area. Since at least the 16th century, the Bentley brook has provided the power for a series of mills in the valley, some of which continued in industrial use until the 1930s.' - Quoted text from the Arkwright Society: http://www.arkwrightsociety.org.uk/html/lp_index.html -
