Italiano: Agli inizi del Novecento la scultura si trovava nella collezione di Stefano Bardini che la indicava come opera di provenienza romana e lì fu vista dallo Georg Swarzenski che la considerò parte di un monumento funebre della bottega di Nicola Pisano e prossima ad Arnolfo, ma con una datazione avanzata intorno al 1323. Il Rathe e la Schottmüller la identificarono come parte della "Natività" proveniente dalla antica facciata del Duomo. La attribuzione ad Arnolfo è venuta dal Salmi che ha anche ricostruito la lunetta della Natività in base ad una raffigurazione quattrocentesca su un cassone del Bargello e a d un rilievo nella chiesa di Sant'Anastasia a Verona di Michele da Firenze. La critica successiva ha accettato la paternità di Arnolfo per questa sc ultura che la Becherucci ha avvicinato cronologicamente alla statua di Bonifacio VIII in una fase stilistica ancora intellettualistica che poi si svolgerà nel pieno classicismo della "Dormitio" e delle altre sculture fiorentine. L'iconografia della lunetta della Natività può essere ricostruita attraverso il dipinto del Poccetti e vedeva la Vergine semisdraiata in primo piano in una iconografia orientale che la voleva assorta e lontana dal Figlio adagiato in una mangiatoia alle sue spalle tra il bue e l'asinello come se si trattasse diun altare. Della figurazione doveva far parte anche un San Giuseppe. La scultura come le altre della facciata fu rimossa nel 1588 dopodiché se ne perdono le tracce per ritrovarla nella collezione Bardini tra Otto e Novecento
