Description
English: Gunnery Sgt. Richard Kellmel, the Air Traffic Control Detachment Charlie radio chief for Marine Air Control Squadron 1, based at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz., addresses the squadron’s retirement of the Marine Air Traffic Control and Landing System (MATCALS) during MACS-1’s 71st birthday ceremony at MCAS Yuma’s Cannon Air Defense Complex, Friday, Aug. 29, 2014. The Corps began implementing the MATCALS in the late 1980s as its primary air traffic control communications system. “The MATCALS and the Marines that were tasked with its maintenance and employment have been placed in dirt from around the globe and rained on with waters from every hemisphere,” Kellmel said during the ceremony. “They have endured sandstorms in Iraq, snow storms in the mountains of Utah, wildfires in California, and flood waters at Point Mugu. Although the technology may be of old, it has lived up to the Marine Corps standard of operating in every clime and place.”
