Description

This is another photograph showing infantry engaged in a mock battle for the onlookers to enjoy. In real life a soldier’s life was always in danger and as a result more elaborate armour was developed especially after the 10th century. By the 11th century a soldier's armour consisted of a thigh-length shirt of mail with elbow-length sleeves and a conical helmet with nose guard. In the 12th century the mail shirt gained an attached hood, and the sleeves were full length, terminating in mittens. Mail chausses protected the legs. A mail shirt, containing up to 250,000 metal rings, might weigh about 11 kg. Mail offers resistance to sword cuts, but it can be penetrated by the points of spears or arrows and is too yielding against a heavy blow. A padded undergarment and a shield were, therefore, essential as shock breakers.

Chain Mail armour was used primarily between the 11th century and the 14th century; chain mail armour was made out of thousands of interconnected metal rings. While chain mail was flexible and offered good protection against sword cuts, it could be penetrated by spear points and crossbow bolts. Chain mail armour was gradually replaced by the stronger and heavier plate armour
