| Description | In medieval times Mdina was very important as it was the residence of most of Malta’s nobility. Prior to the Order’s coming to Malta the island formed part of the feudal lands of the Spanish Crown through the viceroy in Naples. The noblemen of the period would have a personal guard sporting the family’s heraldic colours, the reason behind this was not only for ostentatious show of power but also to avoid and feud in public. The administrator of the island resided in Mdina and was a member of one of the most illustrious Maltese noble families – the Desguanez or as it was later known the Inguanez. While they were paramount in the Northern part of Malta, the southern part was under the Nava family based in Birgu. There was usually a lot of rivalry between the two factions. |
