Español: Dr. Humberto Vásquez Machicado En el hogar formado por Ángel Vázquez Guardia e Isidora Machicado Cortés el 27 de abril de 1904 nació en Santa Cruz de la Sierra Humberto Vázquez Machicado. Tuvo una vida relativamente corta (murió en La Paz a los 53 años, mientras ejercía como Director de la Biblioteca de la UMSA), sin embargo fue intensa, no sólo desde el punto de vista de la producción intelectual sino también la del ciudadano que quiere conocer y participar en la vida de su país y la del joven inquieto que quiere comerse el mundo. Pienso que dos hechos marcaron muy temprano lo que iba a ser la vida de Humberto Vázquez Machicado: el que su padre hubiera sido aficionado a la historia (fue uno de los fundadores de la Sociedad de Estudios Geográficos e Históricos de Santa Cruz) y el que en la casa paterna hubiera una rica biblioteca que muy pronto lo convirtió en un lector insaciable. Vázquez Machicado fue un universitario por excelencia: estuvo ligado a la universidad hasta el momento de su muerte; fue un viajero incansable que le llevó a conocer una buena parte de la geografía del Oriente Boliviano y recorrer la vieja Europa para saciar su sed de saber más y mejor; fue el ciudadano ejemplar que estuvo en la guerra del Chaco y participó en la fundación de una de las instituciones más importantes de la segunda mitad del siglo XX, YPFB
