Winding and twisting in labyrinthinefashion, in some places they are reduced to merealleys between the houses, and at others, expandinto wide open spaces. Projecting upper stories,sometimes so close as to invite hand-shakingacross the street—though it cannot be said thatthis is a custom in which the native indulges——afford a dark and sinister contrast to the central place or square where the inhabitants of thevillage assemble to draw water at the well. Themysteriousness and obscurity of the narrowstreets is enhanced at night by the absence ofany system of lighting. At dusk, save for a fewwayfarers, the streets become the haunt of wilddogs and jackals, who, led by hunger, scavenge inall directions for discarded fragments or putre-fied refuse.
