| Description |
English: Madingley village sign, Cambridgeshire, arms of Colonel w:Thomas Walter Harding (1843–1927), an industrialist and civic figure in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Blazon: Argent, on a bend nebuly azure between two bees volant proper three martlets or. Thomas Walter Harding purchased the Madingley Estate in Cambridgeshire in 1905 and he sold it to Cambridge University in 1948. The Latin motto Per Ardua Surgo (here mis-spelled as surco) means "through difficulties I rise". His family roots were in Doddington[1]. Madingley Hall is next to the church and is now owned by the University of Cambridge and is currently the home of the Institute of Continuing Education.
The sign bears a plate with this inscription: MINNIE BROWN

THIS SIGN WAS DONATED BY THE
RESIDENTS OF MADINGLEY AND
FRIENDS IN RECOGNITION OF HER
DEVOTED SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY
FOR SIXTY-ONE YEARS.
