Planung und Realisierung:
Arbeitsgemeinschaft Kunstwerk "Mae West" am Effnerplatz in
München, bestehend aus Prof. Rita McBride und der Firma CGB
Carbon Grossbauteile GmbH

Bei städtischen Bauvorhaben wird ein bestimmter Prozentsatz der
Baukosten für Kunst aufgewendet. Die Skulptur Mae West ist das
Kunst am Bau-Projekt für den Tunnel Mittlerer Ring Ost.

Sich nach oben verjüngende Carbonstäbe bilden ein Rotations-
hyperboloid, das durch die Drehung der geraden Stäbe über einem
Kreis steht. Im Gegensatz zu schwerem Stahl ermöglicht das
bisher meist im Bootsbau verwendete Carbonfasermaterial eine
filigrane Konstruktion. Blickt man von innen nach oben ergibt sich
vor dem Himmel ein lineares Muster. Aus der Ferne betrachtet bildet
die Skulptur ein Ensemble mit den umgebenden Hochhäusern.

Die Skulptur verleiht dem Platz von äußerst unterschiedlichen Gebäuden
umstellten Platz eine Mitte und markiert ihn gleichzeitig als
Verkehrsknotenpunkt. Ihre Form regt die Fantasie zu den
unterschiedlichsten Assoziationen an. Die Künstlerin nennt sich nach
der Hollywood-Schauspielerin Mae West.
