Summary edit

Description
English: Pre-Reformation Chapel, founded by Michael Macquhen and his wife Janet Rhynd and built in 1540-44. After the death of Janet, who was buried in the Chapel, it was managed by the guild of Hammermen. It is one of the few religious foundations where the stained glass escaped the fury of the mob during the Reformation. One window shows the arms of the Catholic Regent, Mary of Guise. The steeple was added in c.1620 and the enclosing tower in 1625. The Chapel is now owned by the Scottish Reformation Society and has been declared one of the three most important surviving buildings in Edinburgh by the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments.
