Originally opened in 1907 as the Centraltheater. Amazingly only a few days later, on 20 May this theatre burnt down. After 120Million DM was spent on Renovation, it reopened on 4 October 1997 as the <a href="http://www.theater-magdeburg.de/front_content.php?changelang=3&idcat=1226" rel="nofollow">Theater der Landeshauptstadt</a> and is now labelled Opernhaus - Opera House. Quite why Maxim Gorki was given the boot, I don't know. Perhaps a bit too socialist. The name derived from an earlier rebuilding after the first destruction in World War II, opening again on 21 December 1951 as the Maxim-Gorki theatre. <a href="http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=9d4cbfec6179cf18655a88a6fe2f8a13" rel="nofollow">Now it has been extended to include the town library - Stadtbibliothek and the Conservatoire - Konservatorium - Georg Philipp Telemann</a>.
