English: Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala State photographed with a group of geishas during his second-trip to Japan, ca.1929.
Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala photographed in Japan, ca.1929, with a group of geishas whose colourful kimonos "gave the wearers the appearance of dainty little butterflies." This was his second visit to the country where he was received by Emperor Showa (Hirohito), whose grandfather, Emperor Meiji, he had met twenty-six years earlier in 1903. This photograph and basis of the text [with edits made by me to improve grammar and clarity] is from 'Prince, Patron and Patriarch: Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala,' which is co-authored by Brigadier H.H. Sukhjit Singh and Cynthia Meera Frederick. It was published by Roli Books in 2019. The Sikh royal first visited Japan between 1903 and 1904, which left a deeply positive impression on him, leading him to write a memoir titled *My Travel in China, Japan and Java* in 1905. In his publication, he states: — Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala, 'My Travel in China, Japan and Java' (1905) |

This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
