Summary edit

Description
English: Built in the 19th and 20th Centuries, these red brick buildings demonstrate how this section of Downtown Newark evolved from a residential area full of houses in the 19th Century to a commercial shopping street by the mid-20th Century. The oldest of the buildings is a 19th Century Italianate-style two-story red brick house with a front and rear gable roof, bracketed eaves, arched one-over-one and two-over-two windows with decorative headers and stone sills, a cast iron front porch with an ornate railing, a front entry door with an arched surround featuring two wooden doors, pilasters, and arched transoms, and relatively simple side facades, which received a one-story side addition housing retail space, which is clad in wood and features a front bay window, door, stoop, and low-slope hipped roof. The house presently is a bed and breakfast with the addition housing a financial services office. The building next to the house was likely built in the early 20th Century, and features a red brick exterior, gabled parapet, casement windows with shutters, a large 1970s-era canopy over the sidewalk clad in shingles, multiple storefront windows and doors, and simple limestone trim. The building presently houses a hardware store. The tallest of the buildings, likely built around the turn of the 20th Century but indeterminant due to major alterations, is the former Sam Alban Furniture Store, which features a relatively blank red brick front facade, which replaced the original facade in the mid-20th Century, with a storefront at the base and a vertical blade sign on the facade. On the sides, the building’s original arched window openings, which have been mostly infilled, remain visible, with a former storefront opening at the base on the side facade having been infilled with concrete breeze block. The other side of the building bears the remaining flashing from an adjacent one-story building that once stood next to the building, but was demolished and replaced by a parking lot, with the building presently housing a pharmacy. The hardware store and house are contributing structures in the Newark Downtown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, with the Sam Alban Furniture Building being a noncontributing structure due to the massive alterations to its character-defining historic features.
