Il semble que les Canadiens français de Montréal ait eu un penchant particulier pour l'éclectisme, puisque les réalisations les plus marquantes de ce type sont apparues au milieu de l'ancien quartier résidentiel bourgeois francophone de la ville, dont il ne subsiste par ailleurs plus grand-chose. La maison Dubuc appartient à cette catégorie.
