Description

Major Nathaniel William Benjamin Butler Thoms was awarded The Military Cross for distinguished service in the field at Gallipoli, and the Distinguished Service Order for “conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in frequently moving forward under exceptionally heavy gunfire, personally reconnoitring the line and bringing back most valuable reports. He displayed exceptional courage and keenness throughout".

Major Thoms was mentioned in despatches three times: first on 28 January 1916, again on 2 January and then on 25 November 1917. He also served in The South African War, where he won the Queen's South African Medal, five clasps.

The photograph above comes from a series created by the National Museum. The Museum endeavoured to obtain a portrait of each New Zealander who had received a gallantry medal during the First World War. Families sent in photographic portraits which were eventually mounted onto board and exhibited.
