DescriptionMaking silage at Lowsteads Farm (2) - geograph.org.uk - 1380889.jpg |
English: Making silage for feeding animals in winter on Lowsteads Farm near Longhoughton in Northumberland, Great Britain. Marked as 'Low Stead' on the OS 1:50000 map, Lowsteads Farm is half-a-mile south of Longhoughton village. In this photograph, the mown grass has lain drying for a day or two and is being turned over to dry further. Silage is animal fodder that is harvested while still green and kept succulent by partial fermentation. This can be done in a silo (hence the name) or in a silage clamp. More recently, the practice has been to ferment silage by wrapping baled harvested fodder - usually grass in the UK - in polywrap plastic sheeting. |
