Description
English: During the olden days, this barangay was known as “Barrio Abbag”. It is because there was a big tree with big branches that blocks the road during heavy rains and typhoons.

However, when the Spaniards came to the Philippines, one of them who is very cruel, whose name is Aqui came to this barrio. He was fun of eating uncooked small fishes (kumilao in Ilocano). Because of this, they changed the name of the barrio from Barrio Abbag to “AQUI – LI – QUILAO”, where Aqui stayed for a long time. In the middle of the 18th century, there were three aetas who lived in the eastern part of barangay Campo called “Sinanglamisaan”. They planned to build a small chapel. However, this led them to quarrel and fight with one another because all of them wants their suggestions be carried as to the site of the construction. To stop the war, one of them suggested that they will project their arrow with the aid of a bow and that, whoever owns the first arrow to fall will be the one to be followed and the place where it fell will be the site in building the chapel. All of them agreed but the plan was not realized. Until a man named Francisco Gumahong De Asis, a son of Tomasa Gumahong came and initiated the establishment of not only a small but big chapel itself. After the construction, all other barrios donated different relics of saints. On February 2, 1895, Francisco Gumahong De Asis was then 30 years of age mysteriously vanished that brought to the astonishment of the people in this barangay. From this, he was called the “Miracle San Francisco De Asis”. In 1968, during the administration of the late Mayor Vicente Trinidad with Braulio Maramag, they assigned Captain Condrado Delayun with the other six barrio councilors, to serve as leaders of the barangay. During their inauguration, with the consensus of the body, in honor to the Patron Saint Nuestra Senora de Manaoag, they changed the name “AQUILIQUILAO” to barrio “MANAOAG”.
