DescriptionMansion of Misery (8674872910).jpg |
English: Very atmospheric photo altogether taken by Elinor Wiltshire at Dublin's Marshalsea Barracks. Because of Little Dorrit, Marshalsea conjures up the idea of a debtors' prison for me. Is that what it originally was, does anyone know, even if it was an ex-Barracks by the time this was taken in 1969?
RESP: Marshalsea barracks was located near Bridgefoot Street and Bonham Street. It was used as a debtors prison and laid out around two courtyards that housed accommodation, guard rooms, a chapel and an infirmary. Robert Emmet used Marshalsea as an arsenal while the Dublin Militia used it as a barracks in the late 19th century. In the 20th century it was used as tenement housing, before being demolished in the 1970s. Date: 1969 NLI Ref.: WIL 59[7] |
