| Description | La relació de la mantis religiosa amb l'ésser humà ha estat una mica contradictòria ja que per una banda ha despertat la curiositat i l'admiració i de l'altra suscita la desconfiança i la por. En general a Espanya la mantis religiosa és considerada com un animal perillós i verinós tot i ser totalment inofensiu. En alguns municipis la mantis religiosa rep noms vernacles com "mort" (Arroba de los Montes, Ciudad Real) o "cavallet del diable" (Villarrubia de los Ojos, Ciudad Real) que revelen aquesta concepció negativa. Contrasten aquestes denominacions amb les de "religiosa" del nom científic i comú i la de "Santateresa" que fan al.lusió a aquesta posició en la qual sembla que es troba resant quan en realitat està a l'aguait de les seves preses. El fet de ser un gran consumidor d'altres invertebrats com les llagostes suposen que es consideri com a espècie molt beneficiosa. Igualment, la seva bellesa i la seva agressivitat semblen generar una especial atracció en moltes persones. Quant a les seves posades o "ooteques" en alguns municipis eren considerades com un bon auguri. En l'actualitat conviuen aquestes dues concepcions i ja han aparegut pràctiques de cria en captivitat d'altres gèneres al ∙ lòctons de la família dels mantells com la Sphodromantis viridis o "gran mantis africana" |
