Français : Adrien Brué (1786-1832) accompagna l'explorateur français Nicolas Baudin en 1803 pendant son voyage vers l'Australie. Baudin décrivit Brué comme « un jeune homme bien disposé et rempli de zèle pour la géographie » et il nomma le récif de Brué, au large de la côte nord-ouest de l'Australie, en son honneur. Brué retourna en France pour devenir le géographe royal et un éditeur important de cartes de grande qualité. Les notes détaillées sur cette carte de 1826 identifient ses sources. Brué appelle l'Australie « la Nouvelle-Hollande », nom qui lui fut donné en 1644 par l'explorateur hollandais Abel Tasman. Ce n'est qu'au XIXe siècle que le nom d'Australie se généralisa.
English: Adrien Brué (1786-1832) accompanied the French explorer Nicolas Baudin on his 1803 voyage to Australia. Baudin described Brué as “a young man of good disposition and with a zeal for geography,” and named the Brué Reef off Australia’s northwestern coast in his honor. Brué returned to France to become the royal geographer and an important publisher of high-quality maps. The detailed notes on this 1826 map identify its sources. Brué calls Australia “New Holland,” the name first given to it in 1644 by the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman. Only in the 19th century did the name Australia come into general use.
