English: Confederate soldiers marching Union supporters through the streets of Knoxville, Tennessee, USA, on December 7, 1861 at the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War (1861–1865). The prisoners were being moved from the Knoxville Jail to a prison for political prisoners in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. This engraving appeared in William "Parson" Brownlow's book, Sketches of the Rise, Progress, and Decline of Secession. Brownlow had been confined with the prisoners before their removal. |
