"Il dipinto, realizzato a pastello su carta applicata su tavola, nel 1999 si trovava nella sala della Cameriste dell'Appartamento della Regina al primo piano, nel 1966 risulta nell'Ufficio del Conservatore con successivo spostamento avvenuto il 18 settembre 1979 nell' "App. Quadri Mod. ex Biblioteca". Nel 1911 fu registrato nel Gabinetto delle Miniature al primo piano, con nota a margine "Nella verifica trovati il N. 517 il 380 trovasi nello Studio di S.A.R.", e nel 1881 nella "Parete a ponente. Campata a sinistra della finestra" della "Camera n. 30" corrispondente al medesimo gabinetto. L'identificazione corretta del soggetto appare nell'inventario corrente mentre in quello più antico il dipinto è attribuito a Felice Ramelli, come il suo pendant raffigurante il duca di Sassonia.Il dipinto ritrae Maria Carolina Antonietta Adelaide di Savoia (Torino 17 gennaio 1764 - Dresda 28 dicembre 1782), figlia di Vittorio Amedeo III di Savoia e Maria Antonia Ferdinanda di Borbone, sposata ad Antonio Clemente, duca di Sassonia, a Dresda il 24 ottobre 1781. Si ipotizza che le date delle nozze e della morte della duchessa possano costituire gli estremi cronologici in cui collocare la data di esecuzione di entrambi i pastelli, riconducibili ad ambito francese."
