Sources of marine sediment

Summary edit

Description
English: Schematic illustration of major inputs and reactions that guide marine sediment composition. Terrestrial sediment inputs include dust and river sediment. Hydrothermal inputs are fluids with reduced elements that can serve as energy sources for vent microbial communities. Redox zones develop in marine sediment as microorganisms couple oxidation of organic matter with available electron acceptors. Authigenic minerals form in response to those redox reactions and reactions between reactive sediment inputs, including organic matter (Corg), amorphous silica (SiO2(am)), and calcium carbonate (CaCO3).
