DescriptionMarlow Bridge, River Thames - geograph.org.uk - 378962.jpg |
English: Marlow Bridge, River Thames Viewed from downstream, with All Saints Church at the right. There has been a bridge at Marlow since before 1227, when Henry III gave an oak tree for the repair of the bridge, which was somewhat downstream of the present bridge, on line with St. Peter Street. A new timber bridge followed in 1789, but it in turn was replaced by a suspension bridge in 1832 on the present site. Various proposals for replacement by a modern concrete bridge have followed, but thankfully when the 1832 bridge became unsafe it was completely reconstructed to the original appearance and is as seen here in 1975. It originally carried the A404 road, but when the Marlow bypass was opened in 1972, the road across the suspension bridge was reclassified as the C8804. |
