Description

I came across this little statue along the side of University Ave, just next to Toronto Sick Kids Hospital. According to the accompanying plaque Mary Pickford was born Gladys Marie Smith in a house near this marker. She began acting at the age of five in Toronto before moving on to Broadway in 1907. She stared in over 50 feature films and received the 1929 Academy Award for best actress.

The base of the monument is oddly shaped, and appears almost portable (though it is cemented to the sidewalk), but what really caught my eye was the scarf that someone has tied around her hand. While I realize it's most likely someone's lost scarf, though the way it's placed on the statue it might also be a tribute to a remarkable career.
