English: The Battle of Jenin, also called Operation Yitzhak, was held as part of the fighting on the northern front in Israel's War of Independence. During the operation, which was conducted from the night of June 1 to the morning of June 4, 1948, IDF forces attacked the forces of the Iraqi Expeditionary Force, who were assisted by local Arab forces, in the Jenin area. The Israeli forces managed to take control of most of their targets in the first stages of the attack , but suffered heavy losses as a result of the Iraqi counterattack in Gaza, and eventually retreated from Jenin and its immediate surroundings. The Israeli retreat was not orderly and most of the dead remained behind, in Arab-controlled territory, and were brought to burial only after the end of the war.
