Summary edit
DescriptionMechelen St Romboutskathedraal Pulpit.jpg |
English: The monumental pulpit of St-Rumbold's Cathedral in Mechelen (Belgium). The pulpit was carved by the Antwerp artist Michiel Vervoort (1667-1737) in 1721-1723 for the cionvent church of the sisters of Norbertus of Leliëndaal (now a jesuit church in the main street Bruul).
After the French Revolution the pulpit was installed in the cathedral and built around a column by Jan-Frans van Geel (1756-1830). At the top, to the right one can see the Fall of man, to the left Salvation. At the lower end one sees Saint Norbert (1080-1134) falling of his horse and converting to christianity. The massive construction is particularly known for its depiction of the Garden of Eden with mant animals: a pelican, a salamander, a snake, a snail and a frog. These fine carvings are the work of Theodoor Verhaegen.
