Kommentar: Die Frage, ob die im 15. Jahrhundert in zahlreichen Landstädten Mecklenburgs, nicht nur in Neubrandenburg, geprägten Witten in einer städtischen Münzhoheit wurzeln, wie in der älteren Forschung (Oertzen, Jesse) vorausgesetzt wurde, bedarf noch genauerer Untersuchung. Es ist ungewöhnlich, dass an Stelle des mecklenburgischen Wappens (Stierkopf) auf diesem Typ der pommersche Greif verwendet wird. Vermutlich ist auf diese Weise eine Angleichung an die pommerschen Witten und deren Umlaufgebiet angestrebt worden.
