He was invalided back to New Zealand but returned overseas with the 11th Reinforcements. He was wounded a second time at Armentieres in France, but recovered to fight again, finally meeting his death in the firing-line in the Battle of the Somme on 26 September 1916. He was aged 24 years. Born in Thames, Frank Dynes enlisted with the Auckland Infantry Regiment (6th Hauraki Company) and embarked with the Main Body. A brother, William, also served in France. William Dynes was named as legal next-of-kin on Frank's service record, but the registered envelope that contained one of the medals was addressed to Miss Edith Dynes of Matatoki Rd., Thames, who was named in Frank's will as his legatee.
