Notes Victory Medal 1914-19, WW1 Awarded to 13-2156 Pte Ernest John Howard Andrews, Auckland Infantry Regiment, 1NZEF. Ernest Andrews, son of Mr and Mrs Howard Crofts N Andrews, Auckland. Killed in action France on 30 Sept. 1916; see Caterpillar Valley (NZ) Memorial Ernest Andrews was the son of Mr and Mrs Howard Crofts N. Andrews, Auckland. He embarked with the 6th Reinforcements of the Auckland Mounted Rifles and took part in New Zealand's first actions on the Somme in 1916 but was killed in action on 30th September 1916, just months after arrival. It is likely that he was part of the New Zealand group that was given the task of capturing a trench system to the left of the village of Flers. This attack began on 15 September 1916 and culminated in attacks on Grove Alley at the end of the month. His death is commemorated at the Caterpillar Valley (NZ) Memorial.
