English: Victory Medal 1914-19, WW1 Medal awarded to 12-2490 Pte John Thomson, Auckland Infantry Battalion, NZEF circular bronze medal with ribbon; fixed loop and ring suspension obverse- the winged, full-length figure of Victory, with her arm extended and holding a palm branch in her right hand reverse- inscription- ‘THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION, 1914-1919’ surrounded by a wreath ribbon- watered colours of red, yellow, green, blue and violet merging into a rainbow pattern named on edge- 12-2490 PTE. Notes Victory Medal 1914-19 Medal awarded to 12-2490 Pte John Thomson, Auckland Infantry Battalion,NZEF Scottish-born John Thomson, Auckland Infantry Battalion, 4th Reinforcements, was killed in action on Gallipoli on the 8th August 1915 during the charge at the Pinnacle during the August Offensive. Initially reported as wounded on 8th August, the Board of Enquiry held at Moascar Camp, Ismailia in January 1916 confirmed that he was killed in action. His body was never recovered and he is named on the Chunuk Bair Memorial. John Thomson had recorded his mother, Mrs Agnes Thomson, of Ceres, in Fifeshire, Scotland, as his next-of-kin. However, his medals and Memorial Plaque were deposited with the Auckland City Council as unclaimed.
