In ancienttimes it was one of the richest grain-tribute-paying provinces ofthe Roman Empire. Its climate is favorable for Latin-Europeansettlement. It is really geographically a part of Europe, thetrue Africa beginning with the Sahara. France began the conquest of Algeria as early as 1830. Thesubjugation of the country was not effected without much hardfighting with the native tribes and a great expenditure in menand money. In the year 1881, under the pretext of defendingher Algerian frontier against the raids of the mountain tribesof Tunis on the east, France sent troops into that countryand established a protectorate over it. This act of hers deeplyoffended the Italians, who had had their eye upon this district,
