Text Appearing Before Image:
viers Essay on the doubtful reptiles, (in Hum-boldts Voyage, v part II. livraison 3,) where the ribs arethus represented. It was also omitted to be mentioned, that the anterior and posterior surfaces of the vertebraeare deeply concave, as in fishes. Externally there is noappearance of tympanum. Found in ponds and ditchesabout New Orleans, in Florida, Georgia, and South Caro-lina. They are capable of living on dry land, but howlong, has not been accurately ascertained. The individu-al in the possession of Dr. Mease, escaped from the vesselin which it was confined, and when found, several daysafter, was brisk and lively; and I am informed by MajorWare, that they are sometimes discovered two or threefeet under mud of the consistence of mortar, in which theyburrow like worms, as was instanced in digging near astreet in Pensacola, when great numbers were thrown upduring the winter season. It is called in Florida, CongoSnake, by the negroes, who believe them poisonous, butwithout foundation.
