Summary edit

Description
English: Built in 1848, this courthouse was designed by S. S. Bergin as a Greek Revival-style structure, and originally consisted of only the central portion of the current building, and was patterned after the Scioto County Courthouse. The courthouse was passed by John Hunt Morgan’s raiding party during the United States Civil War in 1863, and, after the capture of Morgan and his men, was utilized as a temporary prison for them by Union forces in Meigs County before being sent to the Ohio State Penitentiary and larger prison facilities in Cincinnati. In 1870-1877, the courthouse was renovated in the Italianate style, and had two wings added on either side of the original courthouse. The building features a painted brick exterior, arched two-over-two windows with decorative window hoods, a circular cupola with a domed roof, a bracketed cornice, hipped roof, a two-story front portico with a balcony, exterior staircases, and two large doric columns on stone piers, a front pediment, and steel windows at two rear wings added in the early 20th Century. The building is a contributing structure in the Pomeroy Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
